Why Gestalt And Why It Matters

Gestalt offers a precise framework for understanding how people interrupt change.  Fritz Perls called these the interruptions to contact. They shape the movement from awareness and action towards completion.

Yet it is important to remember that eash one began as an adaptive strategy supporting safety, protection or belonging.

  • The client who swallowed a rule whole and never chewed it over.
  • The client whose anger turns inward through muscular tension, self-criticism or silence.
  • The client whose humour appears each time the work reaches a tender edge.
Hypnotherapy often meets these experiences through concepts such as resistance, secondary gain and self-sabotage.  But labels don't create change.  Gestalt contact work does.  It adds a clinical map of how the interruption happens.

When you can name it, you can work with it.
First with the thoughts, then with the body and then with suggestion.

Saturday, Clinical Calibration Starts With You

Your own experience becomes part of the experiential work.   Because the more you can sense a pattern in your own experience, the more accurately you can recognise it in the therapeutic relationship.

That’s why we start by exploring  your own protective strategies are subconsciously running your career.

For example, Pricing. Visibility. The diary that keeps you anxious.  The boundary that you didn't keep. The opportunity that activated hesitation.  Some version of these in interruptions are activated in all of us as we build our career.   Understanding them creates self-compassion, greater choice and a more sustainable way of building your practice.

Tuesday and Thursday: from embodied awareness to clinical skill

The two online evenings bring the Saturday experience into clinical practice while the learning remains alive in your body.

We apply the six patterns to therapeutic work with anxiety, exploring how repeated interruptions shape a client’s capacity for regulation, contact and choice.

These evenings turn embodied insight into practical clinical skill.

Fully Embodied Training

What you will learn works equally well in-person or online.   If you already work online, then practising it online will sharpen your somatic skills.

Each exercise is self-directed, with clear guidance around choice, pacing and physical boundaries.

Simple objects become part of the learning process. Here's what you need to bring if you are online.  If you are in person, Susan will bring the supplies.

  • Paper and pens
  • A water bottle
  • Clear plastic you can write on
  • A phone torch
  • A ball

Let's Explore The Six Interruptions

Discover the six patterns shaping your body and your practice, then learn to recognise them in clients presenting with anxiety.

Introjection

Absorbing a rule or belief before you've had a chance to test whether it fits.

Projection

Feeling something in yourself and experiencing it as though it belongs to the other person.

Retroflection

Turning a feeling or an impulse back on yourself instead of sending it outward.

Deflection

Steering the energy away through humour, abstraction, a generalisation or a change of subject.

Confluence

Losing the edge between yourself and the other person, until your own needs are hard to pick out.

Egotism

Watching yourself so closely that spontaneity and natural contact have nowhere to go.

What You'll Leave Able To Do

  1. 1
Identify the six ways clients interrupt change.
Recognise what's actually happening when a client wants change and keeps producing the same response. Use precise questions to explore how the interruption appears in thoughts, language and beliefs.
  2. 2
Read each pattern in the body.
Track the experience as it moves through the body. Share observations tentatively and collaboratively, while supporting the meaning your clients are making from the experience.
  3. 3
Use somatic interventions and hypnotic suggestion to support change. Develop suggestions that come from your client’s own language and embodied discovery. Connect the session experience with an achievable step in everyday life.

Thirty Years of Listening Beneath the Words
